Information about Hawaii Death Certificate


Preserving of death records in Hawaii started in 1853. However the storing process was incomplete.  In early times vital records were kept by local government authorities and clergymen. Also, some missionary reports were available as early as 1826. They were kept with greatest care at the Hawaii State Archives, the Department of Health, and the Daughters of the American Revolution Library in Honolulu, and many are at the Friday Harbor Lab (FHL) in Salt Lake City. The FHL has seventy microfilm rolls of delayed Death records for Hawaii. This collection contains 50,000 delayed Death records and covers the period from 1859 to 1903, with indexes from 1859 to 1938.
Since 1911, delayed Death certificates can be applied for in Hawaii. Sometimes they contain valuable genealogical information. Most records are now deposited with the State Department of Health.
