Before mandatory registration, which began in 1857, vital record is recorded at the local town level in Vermont. However, it is not unusual to find an entire family recorded in a “family group” category of registration process before 1820. In some cases, the particular event may happen in a particular town & it may have actually recorded in another town or state where the family previously resided. In some cases, not all events for a family were recorded. Marriages and deaths in the pre 1857 were very fragmented indeed.
